Procrastination is not laziness, is the silent killer of your passive income dream
Are You Letting Procrastination Delay Your Passive Income Dreams?
Procrastination isn’t laziness. It’s a complex behavior that hinders our ability to manage tasks and time effectively. But what is procrastination really, and how can we conquer it?
The Truth Behind Procrastination
Recently, I asked you, my followers, “What’s stopping you from creating your digital products?” Procrastination emerged as a significant answer. This answer illuminated a crucial realization: Procrastination stands as a major hindrance to our goals of creating successful digital products and passive income sources.
Procrastination isn’t merely about laziness. It’s a struggle against the negative emotions associated with tasks we need to achieve.
Procrastination is about managing emotions, not time.
Feelings of low self-esteem, self-doubt, and anxiety can fuel it, turning it into a type of self-sabotage.
The Science of Procrastination
Understanding the science behind procrastination empowers us to tackle it effectively. The battle with procrastination is essentially a tug of war between two parts of the brain: your emotional brain (limbic system) and your rational mind (prefrontal cortex).
The limbic system, an evolutionarily older part of the brain, handles emotional processing and automatic behaviors. On the other hand, the prefrontal cortex, a newer part of our brain, is responsible for planning and reasoning. The limbic system craves instant rewards, while the prefrontal cortex reminds us of tasks we need to complete.
Fear and Procrastination: The Internal Adversary
Several factors can trigger procrastination, including habit, fear of failure, boredom, anxiety, insecurity, frustration, resentment, and self-doubt. However, at its root, procrastination is mostly about your limbic brain, which fears discomfort, overriding your conscious brain.
Research suggests that chronic procrastinators have larger amygdalas, the fear center of the brain. This implies that they may be more likely to fear the outcome of the task, making them prone to procrastinate.
From Procrastination to Productivity
So how can you combat procrastination?
First, realize that your limbic system will try to seize control – resist it.
Break down larger tasks, like creating your digital product, into smaller, manageable parts.
Try not to reach for your phone when bored as it interferes with your dopamine system. Keep your phone away when working and use a timer. Start with 15 minutes and gradually increase to 90 minutes for larger tasks.
Remember, procrastination will delay your dreams of creating successful digital products.
Be kind to yourself and understand the science behind procrastination. Knowledge is power and the first step towards change.
Meditation is a proven strategy to combat procrastination. It has been shown to reduce the size of the amygdala, thus reducing fear. Taking regular, proper 10-minute breaks without distractions allows your brain to fully recover before getting back to the task.
Finally, a practical way to stop procrastinating, especially on a large project like creating a digital product, is to publicly commit to it. This boosts your chances of execution because you know people are counting on you. Post on your stories today and announce the launch date of your digital product, do it now.
So, what have you been putting off? It’s time to shift from procrastination to productivity.
Remember, the journey of creating successful digital products begins with a single step. Make that step today, not tomorrow.
